Description : Since August 2021, the combined effects of a paralyzed banking system, loss of income, the consequences of fighting and economic sanctions, are having a devastating effect on the ability of Afghan families to meet their basic needs.
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has taken concrete steps to save lives.
Since January 2022, the ICRC : paid the salaries to nearly 10,500 female and male medical professionals across 33 hospitals ; improved access to safe drinking water to 1,2 million people across Afghanistan : provided prosthetics, walking aid and physiotherapy sessions to 100,000 people with disabilities ; visited 6,921 detainees to ensure humane and dignified conditions of detention ; assisted nearly 11,000 farmers to purchase agricultural inputs for the planting season.
Much more needs to be done. About 55% of the Afghan population is in need of humanitarian assistance.
States must invest in Afghanistan to prevent the situation to further deteriorate.
