Description : Mg Thomas, wheelchair basketball player, mentioned that after his leg got amputated, he thought he couldn't do it anymore. “However, when I put on this prosthesis again, I can see that I can still do things, there are a lot of other things I can do’” he said.
Along with Afghanistan and Cambodia, Myanmar is one of the countries most severely affected by landmines. In addition to causing direct civilian casualties from people accidentally stepping on these deadly weapons, they have a major impact on people's lives and livelihoods.
Since December 2022, wheelchair basketball teams across Myanmar have come together to compete. This is one of many activities the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) supports to ensure people living with a disability can participate fully in society.
“The main objective of the wheelchair basketball team is to represent Kachin state at the wheelchair basketball tournament on the coming December 3rd International Day of Persons with Disabilities. And we will continue to try so that we can participate from the national level to the international level,” said Zau Pan, wheelchair basketball coach with ICRC Myitkyina.
Myitkyina physical rehabilitation centre has been providing assistance to people living with the disabilities and those who has been affected by landmines and other explosive devices since 2016.
By supporting physical rehabilitation centres across Myanmar, the ICRC seeks to help all people living with a disability to participate fully in society – from sustainable livelihoods, to vocational training, to sport.
