Description : 1. Civilians must be protected. It is illegal to target civilians and civilian objects like homes, schools and hospitals.
2. The sick and wounded must be cared for, regardless of whose side they're on. This includes soldiers, the shipwrecked, civilians, and medical staff
3. Detainees are also protected under international humanitarian law This includes protection from acts of violence and intimidation and particular protection is given to prisoners ofwar.
4. All those who have died must be treated with dignity. Under International Humanitarian Law, warring parties must help facilitate the return of the dead to their loved ones.
5. Humanitarian assistance like food, water and medicine must be able to reach people. So parties to any conflict have to facilitate humanitarian access.
And most importantly, the Geneva Conventions must be applied without discrimination. Whatever a person's race, sex, nationality, political opinion or religion.
