Description :
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has been working in Yemen since 1962 due to continuous armed conflict. That’s 60 years But who is it?
At the heart of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is the mandate to assist communities affected by disasters, conflict or crisis, wherever and whoever they are, and to ensure those involved in the fighting respect the rules of war Together with its partner, the Yemen Red Crescent Society, the ICRC do everything it can to reach those affected by conflict.
It provides water, food, shelter, and medicine.
It supports affected families with longer-term projects to help them rebuild their livelihoods.
It sends doctors and midwives to treat the sick or wounded, and it rebuilds hospitals and other health care facilities..
It monitores the treatment and living conditions of those detained as a result of the conflict.
It helps families find out the fate of their loved ones and, whenever possible, reunites them.
In 2020, the ICRC organized the largest wartime transfer operation of foormer detainees the ICRC has been involved in for nearly 70 years.
It promotes the rules of war among those fighting on the frontlines.
It helps those who have lost limbs learn to walk again and reintegrate into society.
Don’t be confused by its emblem as it doesn’t have any religious connotations.
When you see ICRC emblem, or that of the Yemen Red Crescent Society, know that they stand for Humanity, Impartiality, Neutrality, and Independence.
So, when you see the ICRC or YRCS emblems, you can be sure they stand with those who need help the most. They is motivated by humanitarian needs alone.
This has been the ICRC story for the past 60 years. But it’s also the story of the people of Yemen. For 60 years, ICRC has been side by side with Yemenis during their most difficult moments, standing by people affected by conflict, and siding with human beings.
Over the past six decades, the situation in Yemen has changed but the ICRC’s mission has always remained the same.
Our work has been always impartial and driven solely by people’s needs. The ICRC will continue to assist the most vulnerable.
It thanks the Yemeni people for having it for 60 years.
