Description : 18 July 2023 is #NelsonMandelaDay and ICRC’s Head of Persons Deprived of Liberty, Terry Hackett, reminds states of their obligations to people they detain. Over 11 million people are incarcerated around the world. They are wives, husbands, daughters, sons, neighbors. Like you and I.. They need access to the basics of life – health care, clean water, decent living conditions. Sadly, in far too many instances around the world this is not the case. Overcrowding, poor prison infrastructure, Ill treatment and even torture continue to be the reality. Today on Nelson Mandela day, we reinforce the same call we make each and every day in places of detention around the world. No matter the circumstances, detainees must be treated humanely. Detainees matter.
