Description : Since the closure of CAIMA Niger, which supplied farmers with agricultural inputs and materials, fertilizers have become a rare and expensive commodity on the Niger market. The liberalization of the fertilizer sector and the war in Ukraine, a major fertilizer producer, have pushed prices up to levels unaffordable for most rice growers. A 50 kg bag of NPK fertilizer, which cost 13,000 FCFA a few years ago, now sells for 35,000 FCFA. This is an exorbitant price for small-scale producers on low incomes. Faced with this fertilizer crisis, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Niger decided to support the most vulnerable rice growers in the Tillabéri region. The ICRC Niger has launched a project to support rice producers in three communes of the city of Tillabéri: Kourtey, Sakoara and the urban commune of Tillabéri.
