Fabien and his family fled their village several times when fighting broke out in North Kivu, in the east of the DRC. His uncle wasn't even sure if his nephew was still alive. Thanks to the ICRC and the DRC Red Cross, they have finally been reunited.
In the midst of the turmoil caused by conflicts, which are creating more and more orphans, the ICRC is working to protect children and find their parents or other family members. In Congo, 1,518 children were reunited with their families throughout the country in 2003. Since the family reunification program (run jointly with the National Society) was launched under ICRC auspices in 1997, more than 4,000 children - the majority of them girls - have benefited.
