Description : In northern Afghanistan the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) provides support for medical facilities treating people with gunshot wounds or injured by mines. In the central Hazarajat region the ICRC and the Afghan Red Crescent are aiding several thousand displaced persons, some of whom have taken refuge in caves. A dozen Taliban prisoners in Hazara hands are released and repatriated to Jalalabad in an ICRC aircraft. Following the decision of the Kabul authorities to segregate men and women in the capital's main hospitals, the ICRC negotiated a compromise and built dividing walls. Several patients need amputations after stepping on mines. The prosthetic/orthotic centre later fits them with artificial limbs so that they can regain a degree of independence and resume their place in society.
