Description :
As a result of armed conflict, other violence or natural disasters, many people are separated from their loved ones, disappear or are killed. Some may also be victims of ill-treatment and sexual violence, particularly in places of detention, during displacement or in the context of migration. Forensic science institutes and forensic services play an essential role in responding to these humanitarian issues. Humanitarian forensic activities involve applying forensic science principles and investigative methods to humanitarian action.
The ICRC is the only organization to use forensic science exclusively for humanitarian purposes.
