Description :
The protection of civilians is an essential principle in both Islamic law (IHL) and international humanitarian law (IHL). Both legal systems emphasise the sanctity of human life, the imperative of sparing non-combatants from the consequences of armed conflict, and the importance of preserving human dignity. IHL and Islamic law affirm the principle of distinction between those involved in hostilities and those who are not. This principle stipulates that military operations must be aimed only at legitimate military targets, thereby protecting civilians and civilian property from harm.
