Description : Mariamu Kashindi had had no news of her son, aged 4 and a half, since he was rushed to hospital. She was reunited with him early this evening.

The resurgence of armed conflict since October 2023 has led to a complex and unprecedented humanitarian crisis. The latest escalation, which began at the end of December 2024, is characterised by unusually violent fighting that has caused unbearable suffering for thousands of people, who are in urgent need of vital aid.

The latest fighting in and around Goma, the capital of North Kivu, has forced hundreds of thousands of people to flee, leaving everything behind. In addition to several thousand of the city's inhabitants, almost 300,000 others who had taken refuge in camps for displaced people on the outskirts of Goma have fled the fighting - which has left hundreds of lifeless bodies lying in the streets. The ICRC is supporting the DRC Red Cross in the safe and dignified removal of the bodies in Goma.

The fighting and heavy artillery fire in this densely populated area have left many people wounded.

In January 2025, ICRC-supported medical facilities in North and South Kivu received ten times more wounded than in December 2024, with almost 1,400 people treated - the majority of them civilians and many of them women and children.

In addition, many families have been separated in the chaos of flight and are anxiously awaiting news of loved ones with whom they have lost contact. The ICRC and Red Cross volunteers are working to help these people by initially providing them with means of communication so that they can inform their loved ones of their state of health and whereabouts.
