Description : Ambiguous loss is a particular type of loss associated with uncertainty and lack of knowledge about the fate of a loved one. It is difficult to cope with and can lead to serious and sometimes overwhelming feelings of sadness, anxiety and worry. It can be difficult for those affected to carry out their daily activities and maintain relationships with others because they find it hard to live with uncertainty.

There are two types of ambiguous loss:
- the first is where the loved one is physically absent but psychologically present in the thoughts and minds of others. People do not know when their loved one will return, or in what state they are, or whether they are alive. In Ukraine today, this type of loss is illustrated by the disappearance of soldiers whose loved ones know nothing of their fate;
- The other type of loss is that of a person who is physically present but psychologically absent - i.e. emotionally or cognitively - as if they were not there. This is the case, for example, when someone close to you suffers from Alzheimer's disease, dementia, a brain injury, and so on. Uncertainty arises from a situation that cannot be corrected or resolved. The aim of supporting people will be to help them learn to live with stress and emotions by increasing their resilience and coping skills.

We can't get rid of uncertainty, but we can increase our ability to live with it.
