An increase in the number of armed conflicts in the past decades means that more soldiers are killed on the battlefield, and that many are unaccounted for. This has become vitally important to South Africa and other countries that contribute troops to regions affected by armed conflicts. These countries are not spared from the growing global phenomenon where service men and women go missing, sometimes for many years, due to the lack of comprehensive human identification programmes.
