Description : Since 1992, the ICRC has been carrying out a number of activities in the country, in collaboration with the Red Crescent Society of Azerbaijan, to meet the needs of people affected by the violence.
Through the work of the Central Tracing Agency, the ICRC assists relatives of missing persons. As a neutral intermediary, the ICRC can also hand over mortal remains to the various parties to the conflict, thus bringing some comfort to bereaved families. The ICRC also provides psychological or financial support to these vulnerable people and organizes commemorative events to enable them to come together and support each other.
The ICRC organizes awareness-raising sessions on the risks and safer behaviour to adopt in the face of the dangers posed by landmines and unexploded ordnance.
The ICRC provides financial and material assistance for vulnerable families through the economic security programme (ECOSEC). This enables the beneficiaries to set up an income-generating economic activity to compensate for the loss of their means of subsistence.
With the participation of local communities, which it pays, the ICRC purifies water, cleans schools and streets and plants trees. It also supports the repair of hydroelectric infrastructure.
The ICRC works with the authorities to strengthen education and ensure access to it in conflict-affected areas. It provides educational, sports and recreational materials and organizes first-aid courses.
The ICRC supports medical and health facilities to ensure that vulnerable people have access to care. It provides training for local psychologists to enable them to take better care of the families of missing persons and of children suffering from trauma.
The ICRC organizes visits to places of detention and ensures that people deprived of their liberty are held in adequate conditions and treated with dignity.
