The new school year was due to start today in the Middle East, but it has not resumed in the Gaza Strip, where the intense conflict continues to take its toll on Gaza's pupils, teachers and schools. The first-year pupils join the 625,000 children who have already been deprived of an entire school year and who, as a result of the continuing conflict, are at serious risk of being deprived of education for the second year running.
Lack of access to education has an impact on children's mental health, safety and development, and compromises their future prospects.
