Lina didn’t know about the whereabouts of her son till she learned that he was in captivity. She subsequently received news from the ICRC.
From February 2022 to January 2025, the ICRC delivered 11,000 personal messages (RCM) directly between prisoners of war and their families, on both sides of the international armed conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Thousands of families are waiting to hear news from loved ones held across the front line. When the ICRC has access to prisoners of war, have the chance to restore contact between them and their family.
The ICRC, one of whose mandated missions is to ensure the living conditions of detainees in connection with armed conflict or other situations of violence, is often the only link between detainees and the outside world, through the RCMs.
