Description :
Access to clean drinking water is a pressing issue for many rural communities in Afghanistan. In Jabalussaraj district, most households rely on surface water for their daily needs, which is highly vulnerable to contamination, leading to health risks like diarrhea and other waterborne diseases. The presence of biological contaminants makes water treatment crucial, and bio-sand filters are well-suited for this task. The sand layer in these filters traps and breaks down pathogens like E. coli, while also filtering out bacteria through physical straining, adsorption, and biological degradation. These filters offer a fast, affordable, and effective way to purify water at the household level, efficiently removing up to 99% of pathogens and harmful bacteria. They reduce water turbidity by over 90% and provide strong protection against protozoa, while also decreasing the presence of viruses. Due to their low maintenance needs and minimal replacement parts, bio-sand filters are a sustainable and cost-effective solution for rural and low-income areas facing surface water contamination. Additionally, they improve water taste and odor along with enhancing microbial safety.
