Description : In many armed conflicts around the world, the enforced disappearance of people and the distress of their families is a silent tragedy - a lasting pain that goes beyond the battlefield and continues long after the fighting has ended.
Cordula Droege, the ICRC Head of the Legal Division, explains that large numbers of people are registered as missing in wartime. She discusses what this means in practical terms for the families and the assistance provided by the ICRC in this context. Under the laws of war and international humanitarian law, States have an obligation to help families obtain answers about their missing relatives.
