Description : On the occasion of International Women's Day, March 8, 2025, the ICRC is highlighting a woman who has succeeded in developing her economic activity despite the difficulties.

Ma Wai Wai, who lost her home and sources of income due to the armed conflict and is currently residing in a center for internally displaced persons, is one such example.
She explains: "When I started learning to sew, my mother told me that with this knowledge, I would never go hungry. I wanted to turn it into a profession, taking design courses at home, in my spare time. I look at examples of patterns on my phone and try to reproduce them. The ICRC supports small traders and those who want to qualify have to fill in a form. So that's what I did. I'd really like to become a designer, but as I didn't have a sewing machine, I worked in other people's homes. Now that I have one, I can come up with designs myself, including ones I've never made before, and make outfits and dresses for myself."

In 2024, the ICRC supported 2,319 people affected by armed conflict in developing their economic projects.
