Dignity does not end with death. In situations of armed conflict, the dead also have rights. Unfortunately, wars result in the death of many people. This is why International Humanitarian Law (IHL) requires that the bodies of the dead be treated with respect and that the missing be sought out and identified by the authorities. In this way, families get answers and communities can bury their loved ones in accordance with their beliefs, customs and traditions; a humanitarian act that helps to ease the pain and reduce the uncertainty. Failure to comply with international humanitarian law increases the anguish and suffering of victims of armed conflict who suffer the loss of their loved ones. In Colombia, the ICRC has a forensic unit that helps the State, armed groups and communities to prevent disappearances, to search for and identify missing persons, and to protect the dead and their families.
