Description :
As the conflict continued throughout the country, many inhabitants were forced to abandon their farms. Some communities, however, continued to plant paddy seeds to provide a staple diet. To help the inhabitants, the ICRC donated certified paddy seeds and bags of natural fertilizer to farmers in communities sharing limited resources.
LaHawng Hawng Gyung, a farmer from Mohnyin locality, explains: "If we use this paddy seed with natural fertilizer, we'll get around 100 baskets per acre. In the past, we only planted traditional paddy varieties, such as this local variety, Sin Akari 3, and we couldn't afford certified seeds like the ICRC ones. We had to plant low-quality varieties and mix them with other kinds of seeds."
Daw Yu Yu Swe of Moe Nyin adds, "It would be more convenient for our farmers to work with the same variety every year. By growing only certified paddy seeds, we can have a good yield."
Lagying Dau Hkawng, from Waingmaw, says: "This year, we planted the seeds provided by the ICRC and they are different from what we usually see because their panicles are longer. I think the yield will be better. I've just harvested. We normally have 70 baskets per acre, but I think there will be more than 80. The rice is of good quality. Every year, our family eats the rice that comes from these fields, and there's some left over. I think there will be even more this year."
The ICRC has made distributions throughout the country. It has donated vegetable seeds, paddy, agricultural equipment, natural fertilizers and training to 120,430 people.
