Description : Stéphanie Xu, ICRC public relations officer, explains that the effects of the earthquake have been devastating in many parts of the country. The disaster has left thousands dead and many more injured. The affected populations are traumatized. Many have difficulty accessing medical care, drinking water and food. ICRC staff are also affected, many of them sleeping outdoors for safety reasons. In addition to the armed conflict that was already tearing the country apart, the disaster has also led to the displacement or disappearance of thousands of people.
ICRC teams are supporting the population as best they can, sending convoys with water purification equipment, body bags and sanitary kits covering the needs of 10,000 people. The needs remain high.
