Description : In the East of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, in North Kivu and South Kivu, armed clashes have seen a new escalation.
Francine Kongolo, public relations officer for the ICRC, presents to us 3 things to know about the current situation.

1. Expansion of fighting areas
Fighting has resumed with unprecedented intensity in years, spreading to previously unaffected areas, such as the city of Goma, and reaching South Kivu, particularly the Kalehe and Katana territories. The clashes have forced hundreds of thousands of people to flee, sometimes multiple times. They are living in difficult conditions, often in extreme vulnerability. For these people, humanitarian assistance is essential.

2. Surge in casualties
The multiple frontlines and the use of heavy artillery have caused many casualties, including an increasing number of civilians. From the north to the south of North Kivu province and along the border with South Kivu, hundreds of people have arrived with serious injuries requiring complex medical care.
By the beginning of February, more than 1,400 weapon-wounded patients have been treated in the four surgical projects the ICRC runs in North Kivu and South Kivu. The number of wounded received in just one month is equivalent to half of the total number treated in 2024.

3. Medical facilities overwhelmed and under threat
In Goma and in towns and cities close to the front line, medical facilities are overwhelmed and lack the resources to cope with the influx of wounded. In hard-to-reach areas, treating the wounded is a major challenge: evacuations often take place in inadequate conditions, aggravating injuries, while some facilities have been destroyed, suffer from a lack of medical supply, or are without staff—many of whom have been forced to flee the fighting.
