Description : All too often, armed conflicts damage water networks, disrupting the water supply, preventing operators from working and, if the water is contaminated, spreading disease. Without water, hospitals cannot function, and the entire population suffers and is put at risk. International humanitarian law (IHL) prohibits the poisoning of water sources and attacks on infrastructure essential to the survival of the population. The ICRC strives to protect and guarantee access to drinking water in areas of armed conflict. ICRC teams repair infrastructure, deliver water by truck, ensure sanitation and call on the warring parties to guarantee access to this vital element. Protecting water resources, restoring access and preserving essential services are the fundamental responsibility of the parties to a conflict under IHL, which they are bound to respect in all circumstances.
