Description : Right now, more than 120 armed conflicts across the globe.
War does not just destroy lives, it wounds and kills people.
Also, it devastates the planet.
In many context, it scars ecosystems, poisons water, and kills wildlife.
Modern warfare is not just destructive, It's a climate and biodiversity disaster.
The growing use of explosive weapons in populated areas, for instance, destroys civilian infrastructure and disrupts essential services, worsening environmental damage through the contamination of soil, water, air, and other life-sustaining resources, persisting far beyond the end of hostilities themselves.
And the damage doesn’t stop when the fighting ends...
Explosive remnants of war, for example, landmines and cluster munitions, pollute the environment long after the fighting stops.
They don’t break down easily, and leave vast areas too dangerous for people, farming and wildlife.
Parties to conflict must respect the laws of war that protect the natural environment.
The rules of war forbid the use of weapons or strategies that could cause serious, lasting harm to the environment.
They also protect natural resources people need to survive and restrict attacks that could trigger environmental disasters.
When conflicts are defined by IHL violations of and widespread destruction, including of the natural environment, then development and peace become ever more elusive.
Environmental wartime protection is central to the protection of civilians.

World Environment Day has been celebrated every year on 5 June since 1973. Its aim is to raise public awareness of environmental issues and encourage action to protect our planet.
