Description : The region is unsafe, and movement in and out of the city is restricted at certain times.
Bintu Konto, a mother of five, illustrates this reality. Widowed for ten years, she travels long distances with her son to cultivate remote land. She explains that her family sometimes goes several days without eating, depending on what God provides. Despite the risks involved in crossing bushland, she has no choice but to continue farming to feed her children.
Firewood, which she collects and sells, is an essential, albeit modest, source of income. Other residents, such as Churi Ibrahim, a 70-year-old farmer, testify to the growing difficulties: the journeys to the farms are long and working hours are limited by insecurity.
The situation is exacerbated by the lean season between July and September, when food stocks are depleted and populations already affected by the conflict have limited purchasing power. Diana Japaridze, head of the ICRC in Maiduguri, stresses that this situation is leading to growing food and nutritional insecurity.
The ICRC supports farmers by providing them with seeds and agricultural tools.
