Description :
Juma Musa Deng, from Juba, South Sudan, was severely injured when he was shot in the legs with a rocket-propelled grenade, leaving both legs destroyed. As conflict and violence continue to increase in South Sudan, weapon-related injuries have sharply risen, especially in 2025. Before the incident, Juma worked in many different jobs, but after losing his legs he could no longer work and fell into deep despair, even considering ending his life. His doctor encouraged him by explaining that the ICRC could help him through prosthetic limbs. After being fitted with prosthetic legs in 2007, Juma gradually regained independence. Returning to Malakal, he spent a year recovering at home, then resumed fishing and farming. Today, thanks to his prosthetic limbs, he is able to work again, fish with his boat, and support himself.
In 2025, more than 3,700 people received physical rehabilitation treatment at ICRC-supported centres in South Sudan.
The centres provide prosthetic limbs, crutches, orthoses, wheelchairs and physiotherapy to help patients regain mobility and independence.
