Description : Interview of John Patrick Naughton, Head of Sub-delegation in Darfur : "The urgent needs of these people are difficult to put into words. They include individuals who have been separated from their loved ones, those who still have missing family members, and many who have endured unimaginable experiences. We’ve heard stories of people fleeing with absolutely nothing, not even shoes, traveling long distances in search of safety.
Since arriving at this location, these individuals have faced multiplying challenges, especially with the onset of the rainy season, which has made their living conditions even more difficult. The ICRC has been providing support through cash assistance, focusing on the most vulnerable. This initiative is being carried out in collaboration with the Sudanese Red Crescent.
Today marks the second round of cash assistance, which aims to help these vulnerable communities rebuild their lives and move forward. So far, 10,000 households — approximately 70,000 people — have received multipurpose cash assistance to address their most urgent needs. As more people continue to arrive from Al Fasher, preparations are underway to support an additional 8,000 households.
Tawila’s hospital and medical facilities have also received essential support, including medical supplies, staff incentives, and assistance with operational costs. This ensures that healthcare workers can continue providing care despite the increasing number of patients.
The ICRC has also supported the Rapid Response Team in combating cholera. Thanks to their efforts, all cholera cases in Tawila have been resolved, and the team is now focusing on ensuring the health and safety of newly arrived families from Al Fasher.
Communication with loved ones remains a lifeline. The Protection of Family Links (PFL) antenna is now operational, and in less than a week since its establishment, over 100 calls have already been made, reconnecting families.
For the thousands fleeing Al Fasher, safeguarding their safety, dignity, and humanity is not optional — it is a fundamental obligation under international humanitarian law."
