Description :
Interview with Daniel O'Malley, Head of Delegation of the ICRC in Sudan: "This is the second biggest treatment plant in Khartoum and the wider Khartoum area. It is one of the 13 water treatment plants which, before the armed conflict, provided clean drinking water. During the conflict, several of these plants were affected. The ICRC, in collaboration with the Khartoum water authorities, has been working to rehabilitate some of these plants, replace damaged materials, and ensure they continue to supply clean water to both the current population and those returning in recent months. Additionally, the ICRC, alongside the Khartoum state water authorities, has been providing essential chemicals to complete the process of transforming water from the River Nile into safe drinking water. The lack of access to potable water has led to significant health impacts, including unprecedented spikes in cholera cases over the past few months, directly linked to the reduced capacity for water treatment. Through this project and collaboration, it is hoped that the civilian population in Khartoum will regain access to essential drinking water. Over the next year, similar rehabilitation efforts will be undertaken in six out of the 13 water treatment plants, aiming to provide clean water to around 80% of Khartoum’s population. This partnership with the Khartoum state water authorities is a vital step toward ensuring sustainable access to potable water."
