Description :
Patrick Youssef, Regional Director for Africa at the ICRC, reminds us that Humanity, Independence, Impartiality, and Neutrality are four essential pillars, among others, for the ICRC's work in Africa.
These principles are not abstract. They enable people affected by conflicts to receive assistance and protection—no matter who they are, where they are, or which side of a frontline they are on. Thanks to these principles, 1,300 soldiers and police officers were transported this year from Goma to Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Families separated by violence in Sudan or Ethiopia can be reunited. Residents of remote areas in the Sahel can still receive the aid they need.
In an era of political polarization, dehumanizing rhetoric, and lack of respect for international humanitarian law, the fundamental principles of the Red Cross and Red Crescent are more necessary than ever. They are our compass—and, more importantly, they are a lifeline for those caught in armed conflicts, in Africa and around the world.
