Description : "Imagine going through your day without reliable access to clean water.
Now imagine that reality inside a prison.
The thousands of people held in prisons across Kenya.
Access to water has a profound impact on quality of life.
They need water. For drinking, for cleaning, for everyday life.
Yet getting clean and sufficient water has not always been easy.
Every year, ICRC humanitarian teams visit places of detention, working closely with authorities to improve water systems and, in the process, promote more humane living conditions behind prison walls.
Over time, teams from the Nairobi Regional Delegation have helped improve access to clean water, reaching more than 19,000 detainees across 15 prisons in recent years.
This impact can be seen in places like Kisumu Maximum Prison, where hundreds of inmates now have reliable access to clean water around the clock.
At the neighboring women's prison, the water not only supports daily routines but also other activities like baking, contributing to small income-generating activities and a sense of normalcy, purpose, and skill building.
Because access to clean water is more than a basic need, it is a matter of health, dignity, and humanity."
