Description :
Located in the Wadi Fira province, at the border with Sudan, Tiné has become, since April 2023, one of the main entry points for refugees fleeing the conflict in Darfur. Since April 2023, more than 110,000 people have arrived in Tiné after traveling long distances under extremely difficult conditions. Faced with this influx of refugees, this semi-desert locality has transformed into a humanitarian transit zone where essential needs remain immense: drinking water, sanitation, risks of epidemics, and more. In response to this emergency, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), in collaboration with the Red Cross of Chad, has deployed an emergency assistance, including shelters, water points, latrines, essential supply kits, and psychological support.
Lassana Dosso, Water and Habitat Coordinator for the ICRC, shares: "Boreholes have been drilled, water supply systems installed, and latrines constructed to improve hygiene conditions and prevent diseases. Today, a portion of the 30,000 refugees who were on the site have been relocated. But arrivals continue. Those who are here today, thanks to the support of the ICRC, are able to access water. Alongside this access to water, the refugees on the site have also benefited from the construction of around fifty latrines to minimize open defecation and, consequently, reduce diseases related to hygiene and poor sanitation practices. With the cholera outbreak that occurred in some camps in Wadi Fira and Ouaddaï, the ICRC, through its Water and Habitat department, has emphasized what we call hygiene promotion. We have also built shelters dedicated to the most elderly, vulnerable individuals, pregnant women, and the sick. We are here today to continue strengthening our response capacity. In this context, the construction of two additional boreholes, similar to those we have already built, is planned."
