Description :
On the occasion of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, observed on December 3, it is crucial to highlight the immense challenges faced by people with disabilities during times of war. Escaping danger is already a daunting task for many, but for individuals with disabilities, it can become nearly impossible. Destroyed roads, inaccessible shelters, the absence of caregivers, and a lack of accessible information all place them at even greater risk.
This reality is reflected in the specific obstacles faced by people with physical, sensory, or intellectual disabilities during armed conflicts: from not hearing air-raid sirens to struggling to navigate unsafe streets, or being unable to reach transportation or evacuation points.
Under international humanitarian law, parties to a conflict are obligated to protect all civilians without exception. This means ensuring safe evacuation routes, equal access to humanitarian aid, and taking all feasible measures to ensure that no one is left behind.
Protecting civilians means protecting everyone, in times of peace and in times of war. No one should ever be forgotten.
