Description : There are currently around 130 armed conflicts happening across the world.
And as global tensions rise, we are witnessing a growing disregard for the rules of war, which were agreed upon by nations to protect humanity during times of war. This phenomenon is compounded by the increased role of new technologies in armed conflicts and the rapid spread of harmful information, often faster than facts. These developments have profound humanitarian implications.
Since its foundation in 1863, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has been at the forefront of developing and promoting international humanitarian law.
The ICRC’s mandate, rooted in the Geneva Conventions, is to protect and assist victims of armed conflicts.
This also includes advocating for the regulation of the use of new technologies in warfare.
The ICRC’s neutrality allows it to reach communities cut off by conflict to deliver vital aid where others cannot.
When parties accept the ICRC’s role as a neutral intermediary, it can help civilians move out of harm’s way, facilitate the release and transfer of detainees and hostages, and reunite tens of thousands of people with their loved ones every year.
For those who lose their lives in battle, the ICRC works with all parties to ensure that human remains are identified and returned home, offering a dignified burial and closure for families.
The ICRC collaborates with its Red Cross and Red Crescent partners, combining global reach, local knowledge, and decades of humanitarian experience to help families find answers, support their loved ones, and reconnect after separation.
Every day, the ICRC helps reunite 20 people with their families.
Every minute, the ICRC enables four families separated by conflict, violence, migration, or disaster to contact each other.
And every year, the ICRC provides critical support to over 1,000 hospitals and clinics, treats more than 100,000 weapon-wounded patients, and delivers millions of medical consultations to those without access to adequate healthcare.
The ICRC works tirelessly to ensure that families are not forced to leave their homes by securing and maintaining access to food, fuel, and sanitation, providing clean water to millions of people, and making roads safe and free of explosives.
Together, we can ensure that this work continues.
Only with your support can the rules of war continue to be respected, providing a foundation for de-escalation, breaking the cycle of violence, and minimizing the long-term costs of conflict.
Together, we can create space for dignity, and a path to stability and peace.
