Description :
"Since the escalation of hostilities began almost a month ago, the situation for people in Tehran and across the country has dramatically deteriorated. Hundreds have been killed, thousands have been injured, and homes have been destroyed by air strikes. I have seen myself the terrible consequences of this destruction. Schools, hospitals and critical infrastructure have been hit, even though, like civilians, they are protected under the law of war. People today are living in fear. At a time when families should be gathering to celebrate Nowruz, many of them are extremely anxious about the future.
We have seen as well people showing an admirable resilience, and a dedication to help one another. The Iranian Red Crescent Society has been mobilised from day one and courageously their volunteers and staff are conducting search and rescue operations in very difficult situations and they are providing emergency medical care. We are fully supporting their remarkable work. Very sadly, some of their colleagues have been injured and one has lost his life while conducting this vital humanitarian work. And this is unacceptable.
International humanitarian law clearly requires that humanitarian workers, and facilities should be respected and protected. I cannot stress enough the call on all parties to the conflict, to respect international humanitarian law."
