International Review of the Red Cross: Virtual launch of the new Review edition on Children and War.

In times of war, children are particularly vulnerable. They are too often drawn into hostilities and exposed to a myriad of other risks that deprive them of the opportunity to fully experience childhood. The COVID-19 pandemic and its effects have not spared children in war-affected contexts either. The dangers they face are likely exacerbated by the strain on already fragile healthcare systems and the economic impact of restrictive measures put in place to contain the virus. In these new and ever-evolving circumstances, how can we provide all children with the protection to which they are morally and legally entitled? How can we ensure that their needs and rights are upheld?

These questions were addressed during the virtual launch of the new Review edition titled "Children and War" (published on 25 May 2020). This panel discussion, titled "A Mirror or a Kaleidoscope? Legal Regimes Protecting Children Affected by Armed Conflict," was held on 8 June 2020. It explored various international, regional, and religious legal regimes designed to protect children during armed conflicts.

The panellists provided the audience with an in-depth understanding of the different legal protection mechanisms and discussed how these mechanisms are likely to be applied in the current context of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Event organized at the ICRC headquarters by the Law & Policy Outreach Unit.
