Conflicts around the world are fueling sexual violence against men, women, and children. This roundtable brings together experts working in these crises to advocate for and support the rights of migrants and refugees who are victims of sexual violence.
This event is part of the 2018 Global Research and Debate Cycle on Migration and Displacement. It is jointly organized by the ICRC and the Geneva Centre for Education and Research in Humanitarian Action (CERAH).
The opening address was delivered by ICRC President Peter Maurer.
Background
Fleeing to find a safe haven can paradoxically expose people on the move to greater risks and fewer resources. Migrants, refugees, and other displaced people often face numerous barriers to accessing urgently needed health and psychological services. Criminal justice also cannot be guaranteed when traditional systems fail to operate across national borders.
International humanitarian organizations urgently need to create and support effective and sustainable programs to prevent and mitigate the risks of sexual violence. These programs must enable victims to access life-saving services and rebuild their lives in new homes as empowered survivors.
Event organized at the ICRC headquarters by the Law & Policy Forum unit.
