Description :
Besides its usual activities to provide medical care, protect prisoners and ensure sanitary living conditions, the ICRC strives to promote international humanitar-ian law. In order to reach a wide public, the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement organized a football match demonstrating the parallels be-tween the rules observed in the world of sports and those applying to war. In Monrovia stadium 15,000 fascinated spectators watched a travesty of a game lasting about 20 minutes, in which every single player on both teams broke the rules of football. Then the international star George Weah, winner of the 1995 French television trophy for best player of the year, spoke about the importance of the rules governing various activities in civil society. After this, he joined others on the field for a real match that was played fairly and according to the rules.
