To mark the 40th anniversary of Additional Protocols I and II (APs) on 8 June 2017, the ICRC is organizing a conference at the Humanitarium as part of its series on generating respect for the law. The event brings together historians, lawyers, military officers, and diplomats to reflect on the connection between humanitarianism and peace, the impact of the APs on the practices of parties to armed conflicts, and their relevance to contemporary conflicts.

The conference is divided into two parts. The first part offers a historical perspective by Professor Irène Herrmann, focusing on the relationship between humanitarianism and peace and the role of the ICRC leading up to the adoption of the APs in 1977. This discussion draws on insights from the two-day symposium "Humanitarian Action & the Pursuit of Peace," held to mark the 100th anniversary of the ICRC's Nobel Prize. The session is introduced by François Longchamp, President of the Council of State of the Republic and Canton of Geneva.

The second part features a panel discussion with four experts who explore the political context during the adoption of the APs, reflecting on the geopolitical landscape of the 1977 Diplomatic Conference and the main objectives set at the time. The panel examines the successes and achievements of the APs in enhancing the protection of people affected by armed conflict over the past 40 years. The discussion also addresses the challenges of implementing the APs and their practical relevance in tackling urgent humanitarian issues in today's conflicts.

Event organized at the ICRC headquarters by the Law & Policy Forum unit.
