Description :
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has maintained a presence in Sri Lanka for many years now and has
developed a whole range of activities in aid of victims of the conflict in the country. Viewers should note that it has only limited audio-visual material available on its work there, as the parties to the conflict restrict media coverage.
This video presents the ICRC’s water and sanitation activities (focusing on access
to clean water) and its rice field irrigation programme in conflict zones in eastern Sri Lanka. It also shows the shuttle service offered by an ICRC-chartered ship, which provides the only regular link between the government-held area and the Jaffna peninsula in the northernmost part of the island. Every week about 30 patients requiring medical treatment, supplies and humanitarian staff working on the peninsula are ferried between the ports of Trincomalee and Kankesanturai.
