Description : Since the Netland hospital in Freetown was opened on June 26th (3 months ago) by the Inter-national Committee of the Red Cross, 400 war wounded have already been treated. Among them, at least 20 double amputees of upper limbs who have come from the northern and east-ern part of Sierra Leone, where war is still going on between rebels and Ecomog, the West African Forces. Dr. Bernhard Mandrella, the German ICRC surgeon practises the ""Kruckenberg"" method, ini-tiated during the first world war, which involves transforming the amputated arm into a kind of plier. This gives the victims greater independence and mobility once they return to normal life - having spent several weeks in the rehabilitation centre.
