Description :
As the Russian military offensive in Cheehnya intensifies, thousands of displaced Chechens have crossed the border into neighbouring Ingushetia where they find what shelter they can. Many have been taken in by locals - 180,000 are living in private homes, farms or garages. But a further 20,000 displaced Chechens were not so lucky and a railway compartment or a tent is the best they can hope for. A massive effort is underway to provide shelter for these refugees both by local government and international aid organisations. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), working with local Red Cross workers, is distributing food, blankets, drinking water and other essential supplies direct to refugee families in the tent camps and railway carriages. The ICRC is working with a local Ingush bakery in Sleptsovskaya, where it has supplied equipment so the bakery can now work round the clock to bake extra bread for the thousands of refugees. After two months, the Russian military effort has captured one-third of breakaway Chechnya, in a campaign which has seen civilian centres under attack from heavy air bombardment. As Moscow prepares to close its grip on the remaining centres of resistance and the rebel side insist they will keep fighting, the number of people displaced by this war looks set to increase.
