Description : Ongoing military attacks by Russians troops in Chechnya prompt thousands of civilians to flee their homes. Most of them move to the neighboring region of Russia, Ingushetia. However, their lives do not become much better once the border is crossed. Civilians experience harsh living conditions; they lack essentials such as proper housing and food. According to official information there are more that 260 thousand displaced from Chechnya in Ingushetia. More than 160 thousand of them have received humanitarian help from Red Cross. Red Cross representatives have organized the supply of drinking water to the displaced. They are also carrying out free distribution of bread. According to this programme more than 10 thousand loaves of bread are distributed daily and about 2 thousand hot meals prepared in a central kitchen in Nazran. Dressing material and surgical material is delivered to the main hospitals in the region. Nevertheless special camps for the displaced cannot take all the people fleeing Chechnya, and they have to organize their housing themselves. Red Cross continues the programme of free delivery of humanitarian help, being one of the only international humanitarian organization working to the principle "hand to hand".
