Description : Long-running conflicts have a devastating impact on community services, especially health care, and it is usually the civilian population which suffers most. Medical facilities may be damaged in the fighting, the work of doctors and nurses disrupted and essential health needs of a population are not covered anymore. The general health of the population declines and the risk of epidemics increases. This video looks at the case of southern Sudan, where war has dragged on for over 20 years, and where the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has responded to the threat to the well-being of the population by establishing primary health care programmes.
