Description : Over 100,000 Sierra Leonean refugees, several thousand Liberian refugees and tens of thousands of Guineans are currently either displaced or trapped in part of the Guinea Foréstière region known as the ""Parrot's Beak"". The Sierra Leoneans and Liberians had fled civil wars raging in their own countries over recent years to find shelter in the neighbouring country of Guinea. Since last December, this small region, which is about 120 km long and 25 km wide, has suffered from continuous attacks by armed groups. A number of the 40 refugee camps were burnt down and emptied of their inhabitants. One month ago, Guéckédou (60,000 residents in town and a total of 300'000 in the larger region) was seriously damaged, with one neighbourhood left completely in ruins. Some of those affected by the tensions fled further inside Guinea to live in particular in and around Kissidougou. At present, those who have been registered are living with local residents, while others have crossed over into Sierra Leone and Liberia. The authorities are expecting further attacks and tension is high throughout the region. Humanitarian work has become difficult due to ongoing security measures there.
