Description : Violence broke out in June between rival ethnic and religious groups in the state of Bauchi, north-eastern Nigeria, leaving hundreds of people dead or wounded and causing thousands to flee in panic. The violence in Bauchi was sparked by the imposition of Islamic Sharia law, following the example of other northern states. This outbreak follows a pattern repeated in various parts of Nigeria in recent years, as a result of rivalries between different ethnic and religious groups. An estimated 65,000 people have fled their homes in Nasarawa, Benue, Bauchi and Kaduna states since July to escape violence.
