Description :
14 year old Zubaidullo lives in Garm, a heavily mined area near the border between Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. He lost both legs when he unwittingly stepped on a mine while he was taking cattle to graze on the mountains near his home. Tragically, Zubaidullo’s brother has already been paralyzed in a landmine accident, leaving his family devastated. Zubaidullo was rescued by his friends and taken to the hospital in Garm where both his legs had to be amputated. Doctors at the hospital treated his legs for several weeks afterwards while they healed. Zubaidullo is terrified at the prospect of spending his life in a wheelchair, unable to walk. Accompanied by his father Khairullo, he is today visiting the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Orthopaedic Centre in Dushanbe, the capital of Tajikistan. The Centre has so far treated over 1,200 amputees, providing artificial limbs, rehabilitation and training. Zubaidullo will stay with his uncle in Dushanbe for several weeks while he is fittted with artificial legs and goes through a period of physiotherapy. Now at last, as he watches two young boys with artificial legs running across the exercise room, Zubaidullo sees light at the end of the tunnel. Hope shows on his face as he begins to throw and catch a ball with his new found friends.
