Description :
Bringing emergency aid by boat to more than 50,000 people still living with the spectre of
violence after years of unremitting civil war in the north of the Democratic Republic of the
Congo is one of the most difficult tasks that the International Committee of the Red Cross
has had to carry out in recent years. The mission, the first in a series, involved a three-month journey through dense tropical forest (3,200 km round trip). Completed in early 2002, it enabled the ICRC, in cooperation with the Red Cross Society of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, to reach the many needy people who resided in the villages of Equateur province or had taken refuge there from the fighting and to make combatants better understand the need to leave civilians out of the conflict.
