Description :
The International Committee of the Red Cross is running a landmines-awareness program in the North Caucasus. This project is aimed to get information to civilian population about the danger of landmines and unexploded ammunition which is awaiting them in former combat zones. Children are trained to recognize different types of landmines and to know places where they may be confronted with them so that they could avoid these zones of increased risk. The ICRC mine awareness officers also show to them how to behave correctly when they suddenly find themselves in the presence of such weapons (not to touch them, to go back in their own tracks etc.). They train them to communicate the information they get from the ICRC to others. This is the aim of the program called “From Child to Child” which is shown in the footage. The children learn how to talk to others about the risks and dangers due to the presence of landmines and unexploded ordinance others. This will raise their own sense of value and responsibility in their respective communities and will give them a further incentive to behave correctly when confronted with a risky environment. This ICRC was able to profit from the presence of thousands of Chechen children in sanatoria in republics neighbouring of Chechnya and especially in Kabardino-Balkaria.
