Description : The International Committee of the Red Cross' (ICRC) prosthetic/orthotic centres in Afghanistan have been helping landmine victims and other disabled people for the past 15 years by fitting them with artificial limbs free of charge. But physical rehabilitation is only stage one. In order to be reintegrated into society, the disabled must be given a role, a job, and a means of earning a living, particularly in the case of men and women with dependants. A micro-credit project has been introduced to offer patients the opportunity to launch a business, such as dealing in groceries, repairing bicycles or making carpets. Thanks to an interest-free loan, disabled persons can set themselves up in business and thus take the first step towards resuming their place in society. This ICRC income-generating project is tailored to the needs of the orthopaedic patients in Afghanistan, meeting the particular circumstances of that context.
